Bird-Eating Spiders

You ever wonder about Bird-Eating Spiders?:

The largest of them, the Goliath Bird-Eating Spider, can boast a 10-inch legspan... the size of a small pizza.

excerpt: Despite its common name, the bird-eating spider rarely eats birds. Occasionally, hatchling birds will be taken from nests on the ground, however, the bulk of the diet comprises insects, lizards, frogs, and other spiders. Although the fangs are long and robust and can easily penetrate human skin, the bite is not deadly. The venom is quite toxic, however, and bites may cause severe pain, nausea and profuse sweating.

The female bird-eating spider spends most of her life in her burrow. During spring or early summer. The male approaches the female's burrow and entices her out, hopefully without becoming dinner, to mate at the entrance. The female lays about 50 eggs into a 30mm diameter sack several days later, which is stored in the burrow and protected by a tough cover of silk. If the female leaves the burrow to hunt, she will often take the egg sack with her, secured between the palps and fang tips. While females may live in excess of ten years, the male usually dies after mating at around five years of age.

On the other hand:

excerpt: Tarantulas use their fangs for subduing their prey and carrying it to their dens (or to a safe location) for devouring at their leisure. They don't have teeth for tearing and chewing their meals so they regurgitate digestive juices onto their victim. These digestive juices break down the soft tissues so that the spider can slurp up its meal. All that's left when the spider has finished its meal is bones, skin, fur and/or feathers. The goliath bird-eating spider has been known to take young birds from their nests for its mealtime pleasure - hence the name "bird-eater". Tarantulas eat frogs, small snakes, beetles, lizards, and even bats.
You think that's creepy? Believe it or not there are people in South America who eat tarantulas. Many of us in developed countries are repulsed by the idea of eating insects or spiders, but it actually makes sense if you think about it. They are the most plentiful living things on earth and they are a good source of protein. I've heard tarantulas roasted in their own skins over a campfire are pretty tasty.

They have their fans.

---------

The Goliath Bird-Eating Spider (Theraphosa blondi) :

"This is not a species suitable for any freehandling. If it wont bite you sure get a dose of the itching urticating hairs. So I use a plastic box for transfers when cleaning the cage or mating. T. blondi is not a good beginner species."

------------

Lesser Black Bird-Eating Spider (Xementhis immensis)
[a.k.a. Purple Bloom Bird-Eating Spider (Xenesthis immanis)] :

"This species is very fast and aggressive and appears to do well in captivity when given the proper care. The Xenesthis immanis will readily flick urticating hairs, but these seem to be less irritating than other large species of tarantula."

--------------

Pink-toed Bird-eating Spider (Avicularia avicularia) :

"Avicularia species are quite adept at perching on smooth surfaces while enjoying a meal."

---------------

The Queensland Bird-Eating Spider (Selenocosmia crassipes) :

"The Bird Eating Spider is one of Australia's largest spiders. It is also known as the Barking Spider or Whistling Spider. The barking or whistling sound is a warning when the spider is disturbed and is made by rubbing their palps with their fangs."

---------------------

Salmon Pink Bird-Eating Spider (Lasiodora parahybana) :

"She is very aggressive but also very beautiful."

I just bought an Australian bird eating spider! She's a black version of the picture on this site, and about 3yrs old.
Now I'm just trying to be a good dad and give her what my parents couldn't give me; a warm log and lots of fresh mice :P. They are scary, but beautiful.

Posted by: NewSpiderDad on February 16, 2003 04:51 PM

This morning when I looked out of my bedroom window I saw a huge beautifully "knitted" spider web.I thought to myself, oh boy, how big must be the inhabitant of this unique piece of art? But compared with the Queensland Bird Eating Spider, very tiny. Your web site helped me a lot for my project I'm doing for TAFE. I live in Queensland.
Well done, many thanks.

nifty page...
got myself a rose hair... would like to eventually get me a bird eater one day..

Posted by: brandon on November 4, 2003 12:45 AM

i had a rose-hair tarantula... no offence to the owners but hey lets face it.. they suck... the most inactive spider that will fast for 2 years at most with no apparent reason and they are the slowest growers (not a very good spider for the IMPATIENT) I reccomend if you want to be active with your tarantula get a bird-eater goliath they will eat as much as u do but to their proportion (be careful not to fatten them up too much) and u will have to read into them but the results are rewarding to watch them other than the LIVING PAPERWEIGHT - ROSE HAIR

Posted by: tom of baltimore on November 10, 2003 12:32 AM

it is impossible to over feed a tarantula... they eat when ever they want regardless... plus rose hairs are very beautiful spiders and good for beginnners. all spiders are awesome and not everyone wants a spider that will lunge at what ever moves...

heather you can handle them but i mean come on they are an aggressive spider there is no promises it wobnt just sink his fangs in you and you cant tame a bird eater

Posted by: Tony Godbold on July 15, 2004 11:09 PM

heather also if it helps put baby powder on your arms and let it crawl it will not irratate it as much but in all reality it is just a look at spider where gloves if you dare but trust me a blue cobalt turantuala can bite threw leather a bird eater will have no problem

Why do spiders have 8 legs? You'd think with all the hype, they would only need like 3. I mean come on, why 8? Do they really use ALL that leg power? Christ you have other members of the Kingdom Animalia with none. This is not fair. Darwin is pissed.

Posted by: Spidey on October 18, 2004 08:51 PM

I have a rose hair tarantula, and I named it Red Rose.
What is the biggest tarantula there ever was?
What type of food do they like the most?
How many types of tarantulas are there?

Posted by: Robert Allen Skirvin on October 22, 2004 10:52 AM

Well, the biggest tarantula would be the Goliath Bird-Eating Spider.

The food they like most is mainly smaller spiders, insects and whatever else it can leap on and devour -- frogs, birds, wayward children, garden gnomes....

How many types? That depends on what a "type" is. There are 13 subfamilies, and, conservatively, a bajillion species with new ones being discovered all the time. You'll find more about them at this great tarantula info page.

Marijuana is far less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco. Around 50,000 people die each year from alcohol poisoning. Similarly, more than 400,000 deaths each year are attributed to tobacco smoking. By comparison, marijuana is nontoxic and cannot cause death by overdose. According to the prestigious European medical journal, The Lancet, "The smoking of cannabis, even long-term, is not harmful to health. ... It would be reasonable to judge cannabis as less of a threat ... than alcohol or tobacco."

Posted by: Truth on December 29, 2004 11:52 PM

Oh, come, on...blah blah blah about weed being harmless. I have seen people so stoned that they have blackouts, like people do on alcohol. They function, like walking zombies, but they drive , go to appointments, work and have no memory of much of thier time. you must be a female, because if you wer a man you would know that THC, marijuana, inactivates KILLS the cells that produce testestorone WHAT MAKES YOU A MAN! So if you want to go through life becoming more and more feminine (look at the tits on all those chronic-heads) and not remembering what you do, go head smoke away......

I have an Aussie Bird eating spider and quite frankly they are boring compared to tarantulas from oversea's. I just hope that one day those idiots in charge of environmental well being enact laws which allow Aussies to order larger more entertaining tarantula species from oversea's. That and it would be nice to meet other's who share a common love for spiders in the Brissy area, as like people are very hard to come by.

Recently I found a Bird eatter someone dumped off in a tererium next to the dumpster. It seems this is a very healthy tranchula, BUT OBVIOUSLY THE PREVIOUS OWNER WAS ILL ENOUGH TOM CUT OFF HER FEELERS. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS??????? SO NOW MY QUESTION IS??? Will she be able to catch and eat crickets on her own. Or is she a lost cause? she is very attentive and chases the crickets all day, is there something slower I should feed her. can a tranchula live with out feelers

Thank you for the information. We were having a discussion on whether or not Bird-eating Spiders actually EAT birds.

Posted by: Damon & Alex on June 15, 2005 04:02 PM

Do they actually eat birds?

Sometimes, yes, but not often. Too hard to catch.

I havn;t slept in 3 days....Also, is there anythign that repels them? You know like vampires don't like garlic? I'm on the sofa screaming n crying n praying even if there's a tiny little one in the corner!!

Posted by: jacob on December 14, 2005 07:36 PM

Someone correct me if im wrong, but tarantulas cant jump..there are some spiders that can..but not anything nearly as big as a tarantula. Google "jumping spider" and you should get some answers..

Hail All! :-)
I have to say that (Like a lot of other visitors) I just absolutely adore Spiders with a passion...As far as I'm concerned, they are both the sweetest and most beautiful creations of the Gods upon this Earth.

Anyhow...Crazy though it may sound, I'm trying to source information about how to turn my flat into an ideal habitat for common species of spider, but Google hasn't turned anything up yet. Generally speaking, my flat is cool clean and dry (I would imagine ideal for most common house spiders) but as I am pretty much a "cold" person myself, the temperature of my flat can drop to anything as low as -25°C during Winter. Obviously not ideal for house spiders, but would it make a good habitat for outdoor species? :-)

To Emilio: If I were you, I'd double-check that "Diamond" very carefully at a safe distance. If it's red and more or less resembles an hourglass, then stay well out of their way as they could be Black Widows.
Now everyone knows that 'Widows have a pretty nasty venom, but I have heard that if you leave them alone and don't annoy them, then they won't want to bite you. :-)

On that note though: There is another breed of house/urban spider which closely resembles the 'Widow, but is perfectly harmless. The distinction between the two is that the harmless variety has brown/mustard colour markings on the abdomen, which do not resemble an hourglass.

Farewell, and happy Spider rearing! :-)
